Who here likes to travel with their dogs? Poppy thinks even a rid to get gas is the best thing ever. Who here has thought about travel safety for their dog? I know, not glamorous at all. But super important.
Who knows someone who has had a car accident in the past three years? Todd and I are 2 for 2. We were run off the road in October, one of the first questions the deputy asked was if there were any dogs with us. That time the answer was “No”. A few weeks ago, I spun on slush in to a tree. This time, two corgis with me. Fortunately, they were both safely restrained in kennels. Unrestrained, they could both have been badly injured or caused injury to me.
Besides keeping your dogs safe during an accident, crates keep them safe after an accident. There are far too many stories of dogs surviving a car accident only to be killed on the roadway once they escaped from a damaged car.
https://www.centerforpetsafety.org/ provides a wealth of information for safe pet travel; including information on harnesses.
Because the corgis are travelling with me more days than not; I opted for the Zinger aluminum crates for their safety. While not mentioned by the Center for Pet Safety, the company was able to provide me with extensive crash and safety information prior to purchase.
In addition to being restrained safely, it is important that your pets be wearing collars with ID and ideally have a microchip so that they can readily be identified. A muzzle and a leash for everyone along with extra water are other important things to pack before you hit the road. As our pets become more and more a part of our everyday lives, it’s important that we do our part to maximize safety
