With Fourth of July on the horizon, I am sure that everyone has seen the warnings about making sure your pet is safe when fireworks are going off. Please call if your pet needs medication for the weekend ahead. But, there’s something else potentially deadly about this weekend which doesn’t get the same attention. Corn cobs. Who doesn’t love some summer corn on the cob? But, please, once you’re done, burn the cobs. Dogs are incredibly attracted to the buttery cobs leftovers which also have their humans scent on them. I have seen dogs tear into trash bags for them. And they typically lead to surgery for an intestinal obstruction once ingested. Todd’s dog, Brutus, survived his emergency surgery for one. His littermate, did not. ER clinicians everywhere do far too many surgeries due to corn cobs. So, please burn the cobs if they’re not going straight into a dumpster
